Recent CCRMA Research in Digital Audio Synthesis.

PhD Program. Applying to the Ph.D. program. CCRMA offers a Ph.D. program in Computer-Based Music Theory and Acoustics. Since CCRMA is multidisciplinary, we have Ph.D. students in several departments. While all CCRMA faculty are formally within the Music department, Julius Smith also holds a courtesy appointment in Electrical Engineering which enables him to serve as primary thesis advisor for.

In addition to presenting the ChucK programming language, a history of music and programming is provided (Chapter 2), and the various aspects of the ChucK language are evaluated in the context of computer music research, performance, and pedagogy (Chapter 6). As part of an extensive case study, the thesis discusses ChucK as a primary teaching.

This dissertation presents a study of “air-drumming” in which participants performed drumming-like gestures in time to simple drum rhythms. Various movement features are extracted from these gestures, and the timing of these features with respect to the onset of audio events is analyzed, leading to recommendations for better air-instrument.

A doctoral thesis written as a monograph is structured in various chapters with an introduction and a conclusion, and the PhD-candidate is the sole author. Historically, a monograph was the preferred form of doctoral thesis, and it still is in some academic fields.

Digital sound synthesis has become a standard staple of modern music studios, videogames, personal computers, and hand-held devices. As processing power has increased over the years, sound synthesis implementations have evolved from dedicated chip sets, to single-chip solutions, and ultimately to software implementations within processors used primarily for other tasks (such as for graphics or.

Additive synthesis is a sound synthesis technique that creates timbre by adding sine waves together. The timbre of musical instruments can be considered in the light of Fourier theory to consist of multiple harmonic or inharmonic partials or overtones. Each partial is a sine wave of different frequency and amplitude that swells and decays over time due to modulation from an ADSR envelope or.
